Project Description:

Turkey is among the leading countries in the world in terms of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The 17th General Conference of UNESCO convened in Paris between October 17 and November 21, 1972, and on November 16, 1972, adopted the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

Turkey decided to become a party to the Convention with Law No. 2658 dated April 14, 1982. The Law was approved by the Council of Ministers with Decision No. 8/4788 dated May 23, 1982, and entered into force after being published in the Official Gazette No. 17959 dated February 14, 1983.

There are 22 heritage sites from Turkey inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Additionally, 32 elements from Turkey are included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

The development of cultural heritage awareness is crucial for ensuring the protection of cultural assets in our country. In this context, it is important to increase awareness by examining what cultural heritage is, how historical monuments are protected, the relevant legal regulations, the distinction between tangible and intangible cultural heritage, and especially the UNESCO lists.
